Get in the Game!

Our Church of the Resurrection theme for 2016 is “Every Member in Ministry”!  What an exciting adventure this will be!  Some mistakenly believe that a “minister” is one who has attended seminary and been ordained to serve the local church.  The word “minister” actually means “one who serves” and includes all of God’s people.  We are all called to serve or minister in the name of our Lord Jesus.  Called and committed!  This is what will make our local church come alive with Holy Spirit power to transform our Flagstaff community.   A number of years ago, the legendary University of Oklahoma football coach Bud Wilkinson had retired and been asked to serve as the President’s Director of Physical Fitness for our nation.  At a press conference, the coach was asked, “Coach, what do you see as the contribution of major college football to the physical fitness of our nation?”  As if he had been waiting years for this question, he said, “Absolutely nothing!”  The reporter said, “Would you care to expand on that?”  Coach Wilkinson said, “The way I see it…college football is 22 men on the field desperately in need of rest and 50,000 people in the stands desperately in need of exercise.”  Ouch!  We certainly don’t want this to be a description of our local churches.  A few people running around doing all the work and the great majority passively expecting others to serve them.  This was not God’s plan.  We are to empty the stands and get the spectators into the game.  Every member is to be a minister.   The first step is to Discover Your Spiritual Gifts (1 Corinthians 12:1-11, 27-31; Romans 12:3-8; and Ephesians 4:7-16).  Yes!  Congratulations, you are gifted!
According to Scripture, God has gifted each believer with what the Bible calls “spiritual gifts”.  Given for the common good and the building up of the church, when Christians discover their spiritual gifts and put them to use serving God people are blessed and believers are fulfilled.  We will be offering Spiritual Gifts Seminars regularly in 2016.  Plug in when you can.   The second step is to Find Your Ministry.  Jesus served (Mark 10:45).  As followers of Jesus we are to serve also (John 13:12-17).  We have a new “Ministry” bulletin board in the Fellowship Hall which will direct your attention to opportunities to serve.   The third step is to Love God by Ministering to People (Matthew 22:34-40).  Jesus said this is first and foremost.  Love God.  Love people.  And we discover that one of the most important ways of loving God is in fact serving people.  This honors God in a very special way.   The fourth step is to be teachable knowing that Pastors Are to Train the Laity for Ministry (Ephesians 4:11-12).  The word “laity” is from the Greek word Laos meaning all the people of God.  All of God’s people are to serve and pastors are to train them so they can serve effectively.   Finally, Ministry Leads to Spiritual Maturity (Ephesians 4:13-16).  Many believers have been attending church for years, but are still immature in their faith.  They are educated way beyond the level of their obedience.  Spiritually obese, we need to get in the game and become the mighty force for good in our community which God intends.  This is what living the Christian life is all about.  Don’t miss the joy!  Get in the game!  The victory will be ours in Christ!  The fruitfulness of our shared ministry is assured by our connection to Jesus Christ.
